Boron carbide has been the world’s premier armor ceramic material since the mid-1960s, and despite numerous attempts to find a material with improved functional properties, such as the LLNL’s pioneering “Light Armor Materials Program” and the subsequent DARPA “Light Armor” program, no ceramic material with a better balance of density, performance, and price has yet been found.
That is about to change.
New ceramic materials, specifically engineered for use in ultra-high-end armor systems, are in the final stages of their development. These materials are lighter than boron carbide, and offer superior performance.
